Gutter guards in Charlottesville: choose the product and installation together

What guards can and cannot do
Guards still need attention. Ask what debris can collect above and below the guard, how the system can be inspected, and what maintenance the manufacturer requires. A fixed cleaning interval is not appropriate for every property.
Inspect the gutter before choosing a cover. Leaks, sagging, clogged elbows and debris collecting on top need different responses. A guard does not replace a sound gutter and a clear discharge route.
Compare the complete scope. Include any removal, cleaning, repairs, installation and future service access when comparing proposals. Price alone does not establish how a product will perform.

Best for: Oak, maple, and tulip poplar leaves where the mesh-fineness of Xtreme isn’t necessary. A good value when stainless mesh is more than the home needs.

How we recommend a guard
Three things drive our recommendation: your tree mix, your roof pitch, and your annual rainfall pattern. Of those, tree mix is the biggest factor. We look at:
- What’s directly above the gutter line.
- Nearby trees that can drop or blow debris onto the roof.
- What sheds year-round (cedar, pine) versus seasonally (deciduous).
- What size and shape of debris is dominant.
For most Central VA homes, our default recommendation is Xtreme because stainless micro-mesh handles a wide range of debris. New Wave is our recommendation for moderate-debris lots where the customer is value-conscious. Evelyn’s is for architectural and high-end installs.
Central Virginia recommendations by tree zone
Charlottesville and Albemarle hardwood canopy. Tulip poplar seed pods, oak acorns, sycamore bark, and spring pollen are the main issue. We usually compare Xtreme against New Wave and decide based on fine debris, roof pitch, and budget. See the Charlottesville page for the local pattern we see most often.
Greene County and pine-heavy lots. Pine needles push the decision toward stainless micro-mesh. In most Greene and Ruckersville properties, Xtreme is the starting recommendation because foam and basic screen products struggle under that debris load.
Lake Anna, Lake Monticello, and mixed lake lots. Pine, oak, sweet gum, and roof grit often hit the same gutter system. Guards help, but oversized downspouts and sometimes drainage solutions matter just as much.
Historic or highly visible rooflines. Downtown Charlottesville, Orange, older Madison homes, vineyards, and architect-designed properties often care about the gutter line visually. That is where Evelyn’s Leaf Solution earns a look because of color options and finish quality.

What we inspect before installing guards
Gutter guards only work if the gutter underneath is worth protecting. Before we quote guards, we check:
- Pitch and hanger strength. A sagging gutter with a good guard is still a sagging gutter.
- Downspout size. Sweet gum balls, oak acorns, and roof grit need 3x4 downspouts more often than homeowners expect.
- Fascia condition. If the wood behind the gutter is soft, guards will not solve the real problem. See fascia and soffit repair.
- Existing gutter type. Seamless gutters are usually better candidates than sectional gutters with repeated seams.
- Cleaning history. A badly packed system may need gutter cleaning and a flush test before we can judge the guard recommendation.

If the gutter system is too far gone, we recommend seamless gutter installation with guards added during the same job. It costs more than guard-only work, but it avoids installing a long-life product on a gutter that may fail first.
Comparing another guard system
If you already have foam inserts, brush guards, screens or a reverse-curve system, tell us the product if you know it and describe the problem. Ask whether cleaning or repair is possible before paying for replacement.
Compare the exact products and their installation and maintenance requirements. A broad claim that every competing design fails within a set number of years is not a useful basis for choosing your system.
